Recap

Passport control

  Example dialogue:

– Your passport please = Su pasaporte, por favor
– Here is my passport = Aquí esta mi pasaporte
– Where are you coming from today? = ¿De dónde viene hoy?
– England / France / Holland  = Inglaterra / Francia / Holanda

  Example dialogue:

– Do you come to Spain for work or for holidays? = ¿Viene a España por trabajo o de vacaciones?
– For work = por trabajo
– For holidays = de vacaciones

  Example dialogue:

– How long do you intend to stay here? = ¿Cuánto tiempo piensa estar aqui?
– I’ll be staying here a few days = Estaré aquí unos días.
I’ll be staying here a month  = Estaré aquí un mes.
I’ll be staying here a week   = Estaré aquí una semana.

 

Ordering breakfast:

I’m hungry = Tengo hambre
I’m starving = Me muero de hambre (literal translation: ‘Im dying of hunger’)

Types of coffee 

café solo = a small cup of espresso (very strong)
cortado = a small cup of espresso with just a splash of milk
café con leche = latte
descafeinado = decaffeinated

  • solo descafeinado
  • cortado descafeinado
  • café con leche descafeinado

Ordering coffee

  Example:

Querría un…
I would like a …

  • cafe solo
  • cortado
  • café con leche

Note: When ordering coffee with milk, ask for leche del tiempo (room temperature milk) or leche templada (warm milk) unless you want it to be piping hot, as the standard practice is for the milk to be almost boiling hot, I don’t know why.

Ordering food

At the airport, you can normally order pastries or a ‘bocadillo’. This is a Spanish baguette sandwich, which is really typical.

Pastries = bollería

Pain au chocolat = napolitana de chocolate

Croissant = croissant

Bocadillos:

Bocadillo de tortilla de patata = Spanish omelette bocadillo
Bocadillo de jamón serrano y queso = serrano ham and cheese
Bocadillo vegetal = vegetarian bocadillo (very typical)

  Example:

Querría un cafe con leche y un bocadillo de tortilla de patata.
I would like a latte and a Spanish omelette bocadillo.

At the information desk

– Hello, could you help me? = Hola, ¿puede ayudarme?
– Of course = Si , claro.
– How can I get to the city centre? = ¿Cómo puedo ir al centro?

Option 1

By taxi = en taxi

– Puede coger un taxi, tarda 20 minutos en llegar al centro = You can get a taxi, it takes 20 minutes to get to the city centre.

Directions

The taxis are going through that door and to the left = Los taxis están saliendo por esa puerta a la izquierda.

Option 2

By bus = en bus

You can get the bus = Puede coger el autobús

Directions

The bus stop is going throw that door to the right = la parada de bus está saliendo por esa puerta a la derecha.

Option 3

By metro = en metro

You can get the metro = Puede coger el metro

Directions

The metro station is straight ahead and then to the right = la estación de metro está todo recto y después a la derecha.

  Example dialogue:

– Hola, ¿puede ayudarme?
– Si, claro.
– ¿Cómo puedo ir al centro?
– Puede coger el metro. La estación de metro está todo recto y después a la derecha.
– ¡Gracias!

If you already knew what transport you are going to get you can ask:

Where is the bus stop? = ¿Dónde está la parada de bus?
Where can I get a taxi? = ¿Dónde puedo coger un taxi?
Where is the metro? = ¿Dónde está el metro?

  Example:

– Hola, ¿me puede ayudar?
– Si, claro.
– ¿Dónde está la parada de bus?
– Saliendo por esa puerta a la derecha.
– ¡Gracias!

Buying a ticket (metro & bus)

Single ticket

Querría un billete de ida a la valencia.

Return ticket

Querría un billete de ida y vuelta a Valencia.

Payment methods

By card = con tarjeta
By cash = en efectivo

  Example:

– Hola, querría un billete de ida y vuelta.
– Muy bien, pagará con tarjeta o en efectivo.
– Con tarjeta, por favor.
– Gracias

Note: Some Spanish busses don’t accept card payments. Check this in advance!

At the taxi

Hello, is it free? = Hola, ¿está libre?
Where are you going? = ¿Dónde va?
I’m going to.. = Voy a…

  Example:

– Hola, está libre?
– Sí, donde va?
– Voy al Hotel Mirasol.

At the destination

We’ve arrived = hemos llegado

It’s 10 euros = Son 10 euros
Will you pay by card or cash = Pagará con tarjeta o en efectivo.
By card = con tarjeta
By cash = En efectivo
Thank you = Gracias
Have a nice day! = ¡Qué tenga un buen día!
