A hare asks an ostrich

Una liebre le pregunta a un avestruz:

Ostrich, you can live up to 70 years,

—Avestruz, tú puedes vivir hasta 70 años,

what do you want to do with your life?”

¿qué quieres hacer con tu vida?”

The ostrich replies:

El avestruz le responde:

“I’m clear about it.

—Lo tengo claro.

I will finish my studies.

Terminaré mis estudios.

Then, I will look for a job.

Después, buscaré un trabajo.

I will work hard

Trabajaré duro

and I will get promoted at my job.

y ascenderé en mi trabajo.

I will earn a lot of money

Ganaré mucho dinero

and with that money,

y, con ese dinero,

I will buy myself a huge house

me compraré una casa enorme

and travel a lot.

y viajaré mucho.

I will buy the car I want

Me compraré el coche que quiero

and I will dress in the best clothes.

y me vestiré con la mejor ropa.

I will live a life of luxury.

Viviré una vida de lujo.

I will be rich and thus I will be happy.”

Seré rica y así seré feliz.

“And you, little hare,

—¿Y tú, pequeña liebre,

what will you do with your short life?”

qué harás con tu corta vida?

The hare smiles and answers:

La liebre sonríe y contesta:

“Well, since I can only live up to 7 years,

—Pues como solo puedo vivir hasta 7 años,

I will truly enjoy life!”

¡yo disfrutaré de verdad de la vida!

exclaimed the hare enthusiastically.

—exclama la liebre con entusiasmo.

“And what does that mean?”

—¿Y eso qué significa?

asks the ostrich curiously.

—pregunta el avestruz con curiosidad.

“Very simple,

—Muy fácil,

I’ll worry less,

me preocuparé menos,

I will live in the present moment,

viviré en el momento presente,

I will enjoy my family and friends more,

disfrutaré de mi familia y amigos más,

I will laugh, and rest.”

reiré y descansaré.

“But that way you won’t achieve anything in life.

—Pero así no lograrás nada en la vida.

You can’t live without money, hare.

No puedes vivir sin tener dinero, liebre.

You need to work.

Necesitas trabajar.

Forge your own future

Labrarte un futuro

the ostrich commented disapprovingly.

—comentó el avestruz con desaprobación.

“Of course, dear ostrich.

——Claro que sí, querida avestruz.

But I’m not going to wait for success

Pero no voy a esperar a tener éxito

to start living.

para empezar a vivir.

It’s better to enjoy the journey,

Es mejor disfrutar del camino,

don’t you think?

¿no crees?

I will do everything possible to achieve my dreams,

Haré todo lo posible por lograr mis sueños,

I will improve my habits and my life,

mejoraré mis hábitos y mi vida,

I won’t settle,

no me conformaré,

I will give my best every day!

¡daré lo mejor de mí cada día!

And I’ll also enjoy every day

as if it were the last!”

como si fuera el último!

she says excitedly.

—dice con emoción.

“And how will you enjoy every day

—¿Y cómo disfrutarás cada día

as if it were the last?”

asks the ostrich, puzzled.

—pregunta el avestruz, desconcertada.

“Very easy,”

—Muy fácil

the hare replies.

—responde la liebre—.

I will give thanks for my home.

Daré gracias por mi casa.

I will give thanks for my food.

Daré gracias por mi comida.

I will appreciate my friends.

Apreciaré a mis amigos.

I will take care of my family.

Cuidaré de mi familia.

I will smile at others along the way.

Sonreiré a los demás por el camino.

I will be grateful to be alive.

Agradeceré estar viva.

I will appreciate the beautiful nature around me.

Apreciaré la bella naturaleza a mi alrededor.

I will appreciate the birds

Apreciaré a los pájaros

singing in the park.

cantando en el parque.

I will care about others.

Me preocuparé por los demás.

I will spend time

Pasaré tiempo

with the people I love.

con las personas que quiero.

I will take care of myself.

Me cuidaré a mí misma.

I will be authentic

Seré auténtica

and I will enjoy the little things.”

y disfrutaré de las cosas pequeñas.

And she jumped away

Y se fue dando saltos

in search of a new adventure.

en busca de una nueva aventura.

The ostrich watched her go,

El avestruz la vio irse,

full of energy,

llena de energía,

and thought:

y pensó:

If I only had 7 years of life

Si solo tuviera 7 años de vida

like this hare,

como esta liebre,

how would I live each day?
